The Wolves in the Walls by Neil Gaiman; Illustrated by
Dave McKean
I would save this book for older children, as it can be
scary.  No one believes Lucy when she tells them there
are wolves in the walls, but everyone says, "When the
wolves in the walls come out, it's all over!" Or is it?

The Tale I Told Sasha by Nancy Willard; Illustrated by
David Christiana
The illustrations in this book are just stunning.  You will
see something new every time you open this book.
Written in verse, a girl follows her yellow ball to the
land of imagination.

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
A magical journey back to childhood.  Remember "snow
days" home from school?
1963 Caldecott Medal winner.

Creole by Stephen Cosgrove; Illustrated by Robin James
As a child I read this book at least 100 times.  I
identified with Creole - I felt like an ugly duckling, but I
hoped that if someone took the time to look inside and
see the "real" me...

Miss Hickory by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey; Illustrated by
Ruth Chrisman Gannett
I was so caught up in this book when I was in the 6th
grade that I read right through a spelling test!  My
teacher was very good about it though, and let me
take it over - after all my desk was right in front of his,
and he didn't notice I wasn't taking the test either!
